Keep It Classy, Ladies

People rarely say or do things to amaze me anymore.

I hate to sound jaded, but it’s true. They do, however, totally baffle me. Sometimes I wonder if it’s me. Am the one who’s wacky?! Okay, technically- yes. Yes, I am wacky in my own way (or so my husband keeps telling me) but… and here’s the but – I’m pretty sure my kind of wacky is not socially offensive. I’ve some knack for the basics of social grace:

Tact. Class. Propriety… and for the love of all things decent- decency.

So, I’ve got to ask… what the hell is going on?!

Seriously, WHAT THE HELL? Let me illustrate my point with a few visual examples of late:

*I’m going to quickly, very briefly touch on my personal opinion on the social/political aspect of the march itself.  Ladies, I’ve got to say: Sure, a vagina hat gets you noticed, but does it really make a statement? Rather, does it make the statement you intended? Because the message it’s actually sending is,

We are a tasteless joke. We are not at all serious. We like looking foolish and grossly immature.

You do NOT look or sound empowered. You did NOT ‘take back‘ anything, because nothing has been taken FROM you. By all means, stand up and speak out for what you believe it, but could you just not embarrass the rest of us while doing it? Take your cue from these classy ladies in history:

Tell me, when did vulgarity become synonymous with strength? Did I miss a memo?! When did we start confusing equality for sameness? While we’re at it, who hijacked the feminist movement? Seriously, I’d love to kick her ass have a talk with her. When a bunch of women chant ‘love trumps hate!‘ & hold a sign reading: ‘Women Empowering Women!‘ then take a lighter the hair of a female Trump supporter… that’s not women supporting women. I really shouldn’t need to tell anyone this, but that’s a true story. When women call Hillary a hero and Melania a whorethat’s NOT women supporting other women. Appropriating a term or phrase (Nasty woman, Grab ’em by the pussy) does not actually ‘take their power away’, it ingrains it in the fabric of society. These are not words to adopt, or ‘own’, they are words to toss out with the garbage. You want to ‘own’ powerful words to use for yourself? Here:

Classy. Strong.Empowered. Inspired. Motivated. Beautiful.Intelligent.Confident. Compassionate. Kind. Blessed.Loved.Loving.Respected.Respectful.Courageous.Gifted.Driven.Powerful.Graceful.Giving.Supportive.Caring.Articulate.Fun.Focused.Playful.Hilarious.Serious.Able.Independent.Dependable.Authentic.

That should be a good start. Remember, you don’t have to give up your self respect to make a point. Women have done this noble work of defending and protecting our rights for quite some time, without lowering themselves to do so. Oh, and by the way: I love a good, well-timed F-bomb, just not when I’m trying to articulate a  concern or sentiment and want to be taken seriously. Now, I know there’s going to be a very large segment of our female population that will take offense at this. They’re going to say, I don’t give a fuck  darn what other people think. And, yes- they are totally entitled. To each her own, I suppose. BUT. But to the Ladies Who Elect To Have No Class: all I’ll say is ‘you do you’. Just know that you will be treated based upon your actions/behavior. What you give is what you get in return. If that’s all working for you, then great, and I don’t really know why you read this far along in the first place!

As for the rest of us:  carry on with your classy self!
