Divide & Conquer: How Media and Leaders Are Playing Us All

Media division and Christian response elsa kurt blog

How political powers and media giants are fueling division, and what Christians can do about it.

Media Division and Christian Response

Ever feel like you’re stuck in a social media comment section gone horribly wrong? The notifications won’t stop, everyone’s arguing over things they barely understand, and you’re just sitting there wondering how your phone got hijacked by chaos. That’s what our culture feels like right now.

Turn on the news, scroll social media, or even try to attend a simple school board meeting—and you’ll find yourself caught in the crossfire. But here’s the kicker: it’s not just “those crazy people on the other side.” Nope. Both sides—left and right, media and politicians—are fanning the flames of division, all while telling you it’s the other guys setting the place on fire.

Spoiler alert: we’re being played.

That’s America right now. And I hate to break it to you, my friend—but it’s not just “them” causing the chaos. It’s all of them. Yep, both sides of the political aisle and nearly every major media outlet are stirring the pot, then blaming us when it boils over. It’s time to approach this media division with a genuine Christian response.

As a media figure (on a much smaller scale than many) I’m assessing my own contribution to this chaos. I’ve been in many long, winding conversations with God about my purpose and direction, and asking His guidance. This is where He is leading me: Speaking & spreading truth and calling out the madness wherever I see it… but with compassion and a heart for uniting rather than dividing.

Now, before anyone clutches their pearls, no—this isn’t a “both sides are equally guilty” take. It’s a “hey, stop letting either side manipulate you” wake-up call. Because at the root of all this divisiveness—whether it’s over transgender athletes, CRT in schools, racial tensions, or who’s sitting in the Oval Office—is a strategy as old as time: divide and conquer.

As believers, we’ve got a higher calling than falling for soundbites and screaming matches. Romans 12:18 reminds us,

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

So let’s talk honestly about how we got here, what’s being done to us, and most importantly—what we can do about it.

The Game They’re Playing

Let’s not pretend this is new. Throughout history, rulers have used division to maintain control. A divided people is a distracted people. And the louder we fight amongst ourselves, the less we notice what’s happening behind the curtain.

Media Manipulation 101

The left-leaning media will paint every conservative parent concerned about their daughter’s locker room safety as a bigot. They’ll tell you that not affirming a child’s confusion about gender is child abuse. That’s not reporting, that’s propaganda.

Meanwhile, the right-wing outlets aren’t innocent either. They’ll cherry-pick the worst moments of leftist lunacy (of which there are plenty, to be fair), slap a scary headline on it, and push it out like it’s happening on every street corner. Fear sells, friends. Outrage gets clicks.

Example: Remember the story of the transgender swimmer, Lia Thomas, winning women’s college championships over Riley Gaines? The left spun it as a victory for equality. The right called it the fall of Western civilization. What got lost? A real conversation about fairness, biology, and compassion.

Political Puppetry

Both sides have used race as a wedge issue. The left pushes racial narratives that imply America is unchanged since 1865, promoting victimhood to secure loyalty. The right too often ignores real problems in minority communities, painting every protest as a riot and every concern as a “woke” overreaction.

And let’s not even get started on elections. When Democrats lost in 2016, it was “Russian interference.” When Republicans lost in 2020, it was a stolen election. Both sides have questioned the legitimacy of elections when the outcome didn’t go their way—and praised the process when it did. It’s political theater at its finest, with the American people stuck in the cheap seats wondering if anyone is telling the truth.

Why It Works (and Keeps Happening)

Because we let it.

We eat it up. We post the memes, share the outrage clips, unfriend the “wrong” thinkers, and proudly declare, “I don’t talk to those people anymore.” It’s easier to blame a whole group than have hard conversations with grace and truth.

Jesus warned us about this in Matthew 24:10–12:

“And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.”

The enemy loves division. Satan is thrilled when churches split over masks or politics, when families stop speaking over Facebook posts, and when we forget that the real war isn’t between red and blue—it’s between good and evil. (Ephesians 6:12, anyone?)

What Can We Do?

Alright, time to clean house and course-correct. Here’s how we can be part of the solution:

🛑 Stop Letting the Media Think for You

Turn off the rage machine. Read from multiple sources. Ask, “What’s the goal of this headline?”
Proverbs 18:13 says,

“To answer before listening— that is folly and shame.”

Let’s get back to listening and learning.

💬 Have Real Conversations

Not tweet fights. Not comment section wars. Face-to-face, heart-to-heart conversations with people who disagree with you.

Ask questions like:

  • “What do you think led you to that belief?”

  • “Can you help me understand your perspective?”

And don’t be afraid to say, “Here’s what I believe, and here’s why.” With love. Always love.
(See 1 Peter 3:15—“…do this with gentleness and respect.”)

🧠 Teach Kids to Think, Not Just Feel

Our schools are failing miserably at this. Instead of critical thinking, we’re churning out emotional reactors. Equip your kids with biblical truth and discernment. Help them spot manipulation. Train them to be culture-changers, not culture-consumers.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us:

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

🕊️ Be a Bridge, Not a Barrier

You can hold firm to your convictions and still be kind. Jesus did. He flipped tables, sure—but He also knelt down beside sinners.

Stop canceling people. Start loving them while speaking truth boldly. The goal isn’t winning arguments—it’s winning souls.

Final Thoughts

We’ve been played, y’all. The media, the politicians, the power-hungry—they want us angry, scared, and divided. But we belong to a Kingdom not built on fear, but on truth, peace, and unity in Christ.

Let’s stop being pawns and start being peacemakers. The world’s not going to fix this—but the Church? We can shine in the darkness.

Jesus said it best in John 13:35:

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

It’s time to remember who the real enemy is—and it’s not your neighbor with the opposing yard sign.
