Five Ways To Find Time To Write

You’re busy. You’re tired. You have too many thoughts crowding your brainbox. I know. Oh, AND most of your best ideas come when it’s impossible for you to write. Welcome to the Writer’s World. The good news? There are worse problems to be had. The good news part two (because screw bad news)? We can (mostly) fix this problem. It just takes a little creativity… and that’s our thing, right?

As you may know from previous posts, I abhor long posts that make you wade through pretentious babble before you find the nut inside the shell. So, we’ll get right to it.

Here are 5 Ways To Find Time To Write:

  1. Driving. Wait, what? No, I do not want you to literally write and drive. But we have those lovely, invasive smartphones now, and they all have some speech to text app or function. This is a great time to 1) get those character outlines started, 2) tell your story 3) get ideas out. Don’t worry if it’s not good. You’ll find nuggets of something in there! Psst… It’s also a great time to listen to craft related podcasts/books/tutorials.
  2. While the kids are in (fill in the blank sport/activity). If it’s an option, stay in the car instead of chatting with the other parents in the waiting area. Always have your laptop/pen and paper/writing medium handy for these opportunities. I use Word for my writing, so I have the app and my Onedrive synced on all my devices. That way, I can pick up where I left off no matter where I am or what device I have with me.
  3. In line. Any line works. If you got to stand or sit around waiting, don’t use it to scroll Facebook, WRITE!
  4. In the bathtub. Is that weird? Eh, whatever. Invest in a tub tray (I use this one HERE) and type away!
  5. Just before bed or right when you wake up (depending on whether you’re a night or morning person). Replacing just one of your routines, or giving yourself an extra 15 minutes can make a world of difference!

The list could easily go on for miles, but it comes down to the same thing: if it’s important to you, you will make the time. If these little pockets of time are all you can find, it’s STILL better than not making ANY time.  Will it take you longer? Yes. And that’s okay. You’re still doing more for your goal that someone who’s just thinking about it.
